Stealing Levi’s?

Two guys were arrested yesterday in L.A. for allegedly stealing $100,000 worth of Levi’s 501 jeans.  The story was reported in the L.A. Times.  I’ll leave it to you to read the article.  What I want to know, though, is why Levi’s?  Are they really that liquid of an asset?  I can understand stealing drugs, or electronics, or cars, because all of those things are pretty high value and you’re going to be able to turn them into cash quickly.  But how can you expect to flip $100K worth of blue jeans in any reasonable amount of time?

I do have one theory to propose.  Maybe the two men weren’t going to sell the jeans.  Maybe, instead, they wanted the blue jeans for the actual blue jean material.  Were they planning to make a trojan horse and wanted it to have that casual-yet-sexy look that only a pair of Levi’s can provide?  Or maybe they are big into arts and crafts and wanted to make the biggest denim quilt ever

Anyway, we’ll probably never know.

This would make sense if they’re travelling to Russia or eastern Europe because a) you can easily get jeans through customs, and b) they sell like hotcakes over there. And Levi’s are still cool over there whereas here they’re somewhat indoor recess.
